St John the Baptist's Church was built probably in the 1180s and is mentioned in 1189.〔(British Listing Buildings )〕 It was founded by the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem 800 years ago and originally built as a fortress. It was largely rebuilt in the 15th or early 16th centuries, although it retains some of the original building. It was restored extensively in 1860–61 and a meeting room and vestry were added in 1993.〔 The church has a large west tower, a nave with south porch and chancel. The west face has an ornate doorway, with a large perpendicular window above.
